Versatile actor Karthi is kicked about 'Japan', the Diwali release set to head to the theatres on November 10. Helmed by Kollywood filmmaker Raju Murugan, this one is a heist comedy thriller revolving around a fun-obsessed protagonist.
In this interview, the 'Kaithi' actor talks about the promising film produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu of Dream Warrior Pictures. "In a way, 'Japan' has elements that mirror today's society. The protagonist represents society, especially the social media-savvy society. That way it is universally relatable," Karthi ponders. “My character Japan is not only strong but also intriguing. Towards the climax, there is a hint of a probable sequel or prequel," the actor said.
I am glad that Annapurna Studios has decided to release our movie in the Telugu States. This November 10, the audience are in for a laugh riot. While some of the plot turns and incidents narrated in the film are based on real life, the film itself is broadly fictional. That way, 'Japan' is both out-of-the-box, refreshing and original. The film reflects the core of today's world.
The concept is quite universal in nature. This is a dark comedy where satire and humour are the cornerstones. I must say that you can expect both mass and comedy elements aplenty. A film has to make sure that it engages throughout its running time in such a way that the audience cast away their worries mentally.
Right from the beginning, I knew that this character would be very unique. I molded myself accordingly. I wanted the dubbing to be peculiar so that the audience see my character and not the actor playing it. The voice and tonality have a perspective behind it. People's inner personalities and their voices can be contrasting. Some people look heavy, but their voice is very soft. I am glad the audience are enjoying the voice modulation after the trailer release.
This film asks existential questions about us. This is not a mindless comedy. When we hear the name Japan, we are reminded of how the country rose from the ashes after World War II. That's the spirit my character reflects in 'Japan'.
Cinematographer S Ravi Varman, who has previously done big films in Bollywood, has lent a high-range visual quality. Composer GV Prakash Kumar has helped the film graduate to the next level. The cutting-edge treatment of international standards wouldn't have been possible without them.
Like everyone else, I am waiting for 'Kaithi 2' and 'Rolex', both to be directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Discussions are going on. 'Kaithi 2' would have happened in January 2024 but for Kanagaraj's commitment to do a film with Superstar Rajinikanth. 'Sardar 2' will also happen. '96' fame Prem Kumar will be doing a film with me.
'Japan' is my 25th film. What has always attracted me the most about cinema is its ability to create a magical world for the audience. Newness and versatility are what drive me every time. I don't want to repeat myself so that every experience in my journey is new.
