Cardiologists at Apollo Hospitals Hyderguda performed TAVR(Trans Catheter Aortic valve Replacement) without surgery for BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE STENOSIS for the first time in India.
Hyderabad, August 14th, 2017 : Dr PLN Kaparthy, Director Cathlab Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda said that the severely narrowed calcified Aortic valve in a 80 year old gentle man with multiple comorbid medical illness was treated with valve implantation by percutaneous technique without sutures and will be discharged in 2 days.
He added that the 80 yr. old gentleman Prabhakar hails from Gandhinagar, Hyderabad. He underwent Bypass surgery long back and also had chronic kidney, lung problems. He was diagnosed with Bicuspid Aortic valve with severe calspic stenosis and Heart failure. This problem normally arises due to ageing, as the valve get calcified and the blood flow passage gets narrow. This leads to heart enlargement and the normal blood pumping function of the heart gets impacted. Open heart surgery is the option to treat such patients. But this patient was rejected for open heart surgery and valve replacement due to high risk on account of his advanced age, weak heart, he had undergone a bypass surgery and redo surgery is not advisable on the same patient and his co-morbid conditions. For such patients TAVR is a boon with good results, as it is minimally invasive, done through a small aperture in the groin and anaesthesia is used for a short period. The patient came to the hospital with severe breathlessness fatigue and not able to do routine activities.
The Aortic valve is located between main pumping chamber of heart left ventricle and Aorta, the main vascular pipe supplying oxygenated blood to the entire body. The narrowing of this valve happens over years of degeneration with aging and also by birth anomaly added to aging process (Bicuspid aortic valve). This Aortic valve stenosis leads to heart failure ultimately.
Patient Prabhakar speaking on the occasion said, I was suffering from the problem for the past two and half years, but in the last six months I couldn't sleep, had severe breathlessness, couldn't take a sip of water, eat, life was miserable. Though the doctors here assured me that I will better after this procedure, I was apprehensive. But now I feel much better and comfortable.
In US/Europe thousands of TAVR are done without surgery. But in India approximately 40 cases of TAVR done but in those cases the valve belong to Tricuspid variety. The Bicuspid anomaly with stenosis (Narrowing) at 80 Yr. year age with heart failure is relatively rare.
