Hyderabad, March 8, 2014: Apollo Hospitals in association with FICCI FLO, Yellow Thursday & JRC Convention & Trade fairs, hosted "I am a Lady" - a Health Empowerment initiative, on World Women’s Day - March 8th 2014, at JRC Convention Centre, Jubilee Hills. Actress Ms. Lakshmi Manchu, Ms. Kavitha, President, Telengana Jagruthi and Ms.Kshira Reddy – Head of JRC Convention Centre, formally launched the initiative. Ms. Sangita Reddy, Executive Director, Apollo Hospitals Group, delivered the Key note address on the occasion.

Day to day life & stress is taking a toll on health leading to many health concerns like early menopause, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, skin problems and major disease like cancer in few. A high powered panel of Specialists from Apollo Health City comprising of Dr. Rooma Sinha, Gynaecologist; Dr. Asha Subbalakshmi, Gastroenterologist; Dr. Vinita Reddy, Oncologist & Dr. Pallavi Reddy, Dermatologist, addressed most of these concerns. Besides a Zumba session by Ms. Vijaya Tupurani for the fitness enthusiasts, a demo on good meal which is filling and healthy by diet and food consultants was enthusiastically received by the participants.

The program had several other elements like photography and art exhibition, casual painting for amateurs etc. Photography & Art Exhibition by Ms. Loona Logan to encourage & support women creativity & amateur artists was a hit with the ladies. A basic check and dental care package was extended to all.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Sangita Reddy said, Health is the biggest virtue and this initiative aims at covering a 360* overall wellness for women. “I am a lady” will be an online portal which will have continuous updates on women health and well being. It will serve as a platform for women from different fields to share their ideas, Dreams, ambition, purposes and concerns. There is so much for all of us to celebrate, but this occasion also reminds us that there are certain things which need a definite change. Like, women are discriminated in employment even today, they are paid less than men. Women in our country are malnourished leading to 56000 new born deaths per month, in comparison China loses only 6000 children during birth. In India Cervical cancer is the biggest concern, which is not the case at all in USA. Atrocities aganst women are prevalent in every class and this is a grave concern too, she added.

Ms. Lakshmi Manchu said, the change that we all desire should start from our homes, bring about the change within our families, in our immediate environment, automatically we can see the change in the society, she added.

Ms. Kavitha speaking on the occasion said, why women only should have a women’s day, men also should have a Men’s day, but they are too arrogant to celebrate one and feel that every day is theirs, while designating only one particular day for women. The kind of problems and discrimination women face in our society is different, in addition to the class, caste discrimination they already undergo. As long as women don’t raise their voice they won’t be given a choice and men will continue to decide on their behalf. Women should start demanding security first from within their offices before demanding from the society or government, most MNCs don’t have security for their women staff on their priority. She said Telangana Jagruthi will focus and work as a pressure group to ameliorate the well being of women and on security and development of women.

“What struck me the most was the whole initiative for the empowerment of women, there are groups from different fields coming together to create awareness of health, safety and various other issues. Today empowerment of women has become a tremendous resource for social change and a broader fight against global poverty, I truly believe this initiative will help in making a difference..” says Kshira Reddy.
