UBF ORGANISED THE PINK RIBBON EVENING 2014 TO CELEBRATE SEVEN POSITIVELY EVENTFUL YEARS SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN ANDHRA PRADESH & BEYOND
CHALLENGES & CHOICES WHEN FACED WITH BREAST CANCER DISCUSSED AT THE PINK RIBBON EVENING 2014
Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation (UBF) organised the PINK RIBBON EVENING 2014 to commemorate SEVEN positively eventful years serving the community in Andhra Pradesh & beyond. Over the years, the Foundation has been working with a missionary zeal at empowering people in Andhra Pradesh about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, campaigning for excellence in breast cancer treatment, and equally, spreading the message of Hope, Survival & Courage.
The highlight of the Pink Ribbon Evening was an innovative and thought provoking Panel discussion on the CHALLENGES & CHOICES relating to Breast cancer, which was chaired by Dr Evita Fernandez, a well known Gynecologist and Managing Director of Fernandez Hospital. Two breast cancer conquerors, ie Dr Ananda Shankar Jayant, a well known Classical dancer and Dr Anuradha, Associate Professor of Microbiology from Warangal highlighted the challenges they faced and choices they made when confronted with breast cancer. Dr Raghu Ram, CEO & Director of UBF highlighted the FIVE challenges that he encountered when he returned to practice the art & science of Breast surgery in India. From establishing the Indian Subcontinent’s FIRST free standing purpose built and comprehensive Breast health Centre at KIMS to playing a key role in formation of the Association of Breast Surgeons of India, the challenges relating to practicing ethically, the huge challenge of dealing with the ‘Angelina Jolie effect1 - the scare that she has created amongst the ‘worried well’ and finally the challenges and evidence based choices available to patients when faced with breast cancer were illustrated eloquently by him through a power point presentation.
Mrs Shobhaa De, the CHIEF GUEST for the evening & an internationally renowned author, designer & columnist paid rich tributes to Dr Raghu Ram’s vision & complimented the innovative initiatives undertaken by UBF over the past SEVEN years under his leadership. She also contributed positively to the Panel Discussion emphasizing the need for women to consider choices clearly before embarking on treatment for breast cancer. She also stressed the urgent need for adequate counselling by treating doctors so that women can make informed choices relating to their breast cancer treatment.
Mr Jayesh Ranjan, Chief Advisor of UBF welcomed the gathering and Mrs Chandana Khan, Special Chief Secretary (Tourism), Govt of AP, Guest of honour for the Evening, complimented the UBF for completing seven impactful years serving the Community in Andhra Pradesh. Breast cancer survivors & prominent people from all walks of life attended the event.
