The Hearing Impaired Girl Child Initiative'
Our regressive culture makes it difficult for a hearing impaired girl child in India to lead a normal life. In our society, girls are given lower priority over boys for everything. The prohibitive cost of treatment often forces parents to make a choice when they have more than one child - and they usually choose to use their limited resources for their sons rather than daughters. A hearing and speech impaired Indian girl may not get the education that she needs, the job that she wants or the life partner that she deserves. She.is considered as a burden by the society and will be deprived a normal life. She will have to be dependent on others for the rest of her life enduring physical and mental abuse.
SAHI has taken up the 'The Hearing Impaired Girl Child Initiative' to provide succor to such hearing impaired girl children as The initiative aims to ensure an equal chance to live her life independently and fulfill her life's desires. This is possible because there is a treatment available for her hearing impairment.
In India, 4 in every 1000 babies born suffer from severe to profound hearing loss and they need to undergo state-of-the-art Cochlear Implant Surgery to lead a normal life like any other child. There are some who can afford the surgery, some who can barely afford the surgery and then there are those who can't afford to dream of getting this surgery.
Helping a hearing impaired girl child through Cochlear Implant Surgery will help her evolve Into .1 respectable citizen. She will be able to take care of herself and strive to achieve her dreams and ambitions. She will also be able to live life on her own terms rather than those unfairly imposed on her due to her inability to hear or speak, says Dr E.C. Vinay Kumar.
