To stop Open Defecation, India needs 12crore toilets

Hyderabad, November 19 Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, a NGO in General

Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations observed World Toilet Day here in Hyderabad on 19th November. To mark the occasion and observe the same, a 2 kilometer walk was organised from Jalavihar to People's Plaza on Necklace Road. The gorgeous Charmy Kaur, film actress graced the occasion and help spread the word to end open defecation.

The World Toilet Day was observed to fulfill the dream of Prime Minister of India to provide Toilet in each household by 2019.
About one thousand people took part in the walk.

Every year November 19 is observed as World Toilet Day. United Nations designated this day as World Toilet Day. The aim of World Toilet Day is to raise awareness about the people in the world who don't have access to a toilet, despite the fact that it is a human right to have clean water and sanitation."

For 2015, World Toilet Day will highlight the relationship between nutrition and sanitation, giving emphasis on the importance of toilets to support adequate nutrition and better health.

2.4 Billion People Worldwide Lack Access To Decent Sanitation with one billion still defecating in the open.

No country in the world has more open defecation than India. One in two people defecate outside. Every year, 200,000 children in India die from diseases caused by fecal contamination. About 300 million women and girls in India still have no other choice and defecate openly. This is Leading to Rape and Disease. Nearly 47 per cent of India's population still defecates in open.

Our endeavor through this walk and observance of World Toilet Day this year is to spread a word across that sanitation is a human right. It brings dignity, equality and safety. It is vital for good health. It sustains clean environment. Sanitation is more importance than independence. Through this walk we would like to tell people to use toilet and prevent disease.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has ignited the candle of cleanliness among Indians to make India clean. He has asked us to restore the culture of sanitation which Indians had during Harappa Civilization.

We should join hands with the Prime Minister with all the might and resources, one has to make India clean and free from defecation in the open. Be civilized, be cultured, be clean, make India clean and standout in the community of nations said Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder, Sulabh Sanitation & Social Reform Movement.

Not only has Prime Minister Modi identified toilets as a national priority, but India's path-breaking NGO, Sulabh International has already shown that Indians are willing to pay for clean, functioning toilets. Sulabh has scaled to 8000 pay-for-use toilets across India., and introduced two lead pit technology that is being used in over 1.2 million homes. Partnerships between American startups and Sulabh are creating various sanitation solutions for the different environments in India.

To achieve the goal of Swach Bharat to make India Open Defecation Free by 2019,12 crore toilets needs to be constructed. India has about 6.46lakh villages, 2.51lakh Gram Panchayats, 675 Districts. To make each of the villages Open Defecation Free, 200 toilets required for each of these villages. This would cost Rs 60lakh to make the village Open Defecation Free, with provision of a household toilet to each house. Similarly to 2.51lakh Gram Panchayat(each have an average of three villages)! would require Rs 1.8crore to make it Open Defecation Free Gram Panchayat. Similarly, it would cost Rs 600crore to make each district Open Defecation Free District.
