Story
Balu (Sree Vishnu) shoos away girls because he had a heartbreak while in college. Sarayu (Reba Monica John), the paying guest at his house, falls in love with him. Meanwhile, Balu's father (VK Naresh) is desperate to complete graduation. Acquiring a Degree is a matter of honour for him. Just as Balu starts reciprocating his feelings for Sarayu, an unexpected family-level twist bombards the duo. What is it? Is there a way out?
Performances
Sree Vishnu and VK Naresh headline the first hour. The latter is effortless, tickling the funny bone with his obsession with academic qualification in search of an identity. Naresh hasn't been this hilarious since 'Sammohanam'. The lead man looks the part of a responsible boy next door in one scene and completely off-hand in another with practiced ease.
Debutante Reba Monica John looks glamorous in that Muscat song. Nellore Sudharshan, as the male lead's sidekick, lends some respect to his routine role with his talent. Vennela Kishore (as Kula Sekhar) plays a caste-obsessed clown animating the screen with impeccable timing. Sreekanth Iyengar threatens to slip into a routine role at first, but his character acquires funny streaks later. Rajeev Kanakala plays a melodramatic part.
Technical aspects
Gopi Sundar's music was better in the recent 'Manu Charitra' in comparison. If the songs feel good, that's because of the characterizations and the overall mood of the film. Art director Brahma Kadali and cinematographer Raam Reddy do what was needed. Editor Chota K Prasad wraps up the first half in a little less than one hour. In the second hour, he lets a few scenes overstay their welcome.
Analysis
Director Ram Abbaraju returns with Bhanu Bogavarapu's story and Nandu Savirigana's dialogues. The first hour goes into establishing nothing specific. The interval twist comes totally out of the blue. If you consider the story that unfolds in the second half, a lot of what takes place in the first half has no direct bearing on the final outcome. Nevertheless, the film maintains its quality and tenor consistently, making us not expect any serious sensibility.
Up until a point, the film relies excessively on Naresh's comic timing and the weird situation he finds himself in. In the second half, the theatre of action shifts to another family. Naresh's exaggerated antics in the presence of two dozen relatives are hilarious. The awkward situation Balu and his girlfriend find themselves in drives the story forward. The resolution is simplistic and convenient, but we don't want to complain, for the film's aim is to make us laugh, not sob.
Goparaju Ramana's cameo changes the mood at the 25th minute. Soon after, the film is back to presenting entertainment, with Sarayu seeing Balu in a new light.
At times, the film comes across as tonally not self-aware. The actors don't appear wacky enough for the film's quirky situations. Even though the lead man looks too serious for the nature of comedy, we somehow overlook those minute flaws.
