Barroz: Rs 150 Crore Disaster for Mohanlal

Barroz, the Malayalam-language fantasy film, was released in theatres on December 25. Headlined and directed by Mohanlal, the film has turned out to be a disaster.

The costs are astonishingly high. Its budget is estimated to be anywhere from Rs 100 crore to Rs 150 crore (Dr. Sharon Thomas, the marketing head of Barroz 3D, has put the figure at the highest possible range). However, so far, the film has grossed just about Rs 10 crore at the box office.

Mohanlal has been quoted as saying that Barroz, which was in the making for six years, hasn't been made for money. It's his "gift" to an audience and an industry that has made what he is today over nearly five decades. Barroz is his directorial debut.

Since it is a children-friendly movie, it has been released only in 3D. The failure of Barroz in non-Malayalam markets is a wake-up call for Mollywood. His film Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea, released in 2021, was also a disaster. It was made on a budget of more than Rs 100 crores.

Produced by Antony Perumbavoor's Aashirvad Cinemas, Barroz also features Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Nerea Camacho and Tuhin Menon.
