BIG! PVR Inox Smart Cinemas target small towns

India's largest multiplex chain, PVR Inox, has announced an ambitious expansion plan. The company, as per a national media report today, intends to roll out 300 low-cost Smart Cinemas across smaller towns in India over the next three years.

Ticket prices will sit around Rs 175, roughly 40 percent cheaper than typical metro rates. Food and beverage prices will also drop significantly to match local budgets.

This move marks a direct push into underserved tier-2 and tier-3 markets. Towns like Muzaffarpur, Barrackpore, and Hanumangarh are high on the list. To keep costs manageable, PVR Inox is adopting a franchise-led model. Capital expenditure per screen drops from Rs 4 crore to under Rs 2 crore, Economic Times said.

Single screens face a threat:

The expansion poses a serious challenge for traditional single-screen theaters. Single screens have struggled for years against rising operational costs, declining footfalls, and streaming platforms. Many survived solely because they offered affordable ticket prices in non-metro regions. With a major multiplex chain offering clean facilities, air conditioning, and high-quality projection at Rs 175, single screens lose their main competitive edge.

In the Telugu States, exhibitor groups like Asian Group and individuals like Suresh Babu bring a deeper experience. They will be able to resist the competition.
