Godzilla Minus One arrived in 2023 and changed how people saw the franchise. Set in postwar Japan, it followed a former kamikaze pilot haunted by guilt and loss. "Godzilla was not just a monster in this film. He was a symbol of unresolved trauma from the war. The story was small and personal, even as the destruction was catastrophic," a Hollywood film reviewer mentioned. Critics praised the movie for treating the human characters as the real center of the film. It won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, a first for a Japanese production. It also became the highest-grossing Japanese-language Godzilla film worldwide, made on a budget of roughly 15 million dollars.
Godzilla Minus Zero is the direct sequel, again written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Japan has clung to a fragile peace, and a new threat disrupts it. Early details suggest the story expands beyond Japan, with footage reportedly showing Godzilla near the Statue of Liberty. The film opens in Japan on November 3 of this year. A North American release follows on November 6.
It has to be seen whether Godzilla Minus Zero will be released in Indian theatres. The first part didn't get a release.
