Madhavan-starring GDN, a biographical drama, has been declared a box-office flop. It tells the story of Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, a legendary self-taught inventor, industrialist, and innovator from Coimbatore known as the "Edison of India".
Released on last Friday, the film's 3-day India net collection crossed just about Rs 2.69 crore (with gross collections around Rs 3.01 crore).
The screenplay takes a somewhat safe, docudrama-like approach that relies heavily on standard biopic tropes. This has turned out to be the film's biggest demerit. Also starring Priyamani, Jayaram, Sathyaraj, Dushara Vijayan, Vinay Rai, and Karunakaran, GDN's failure in the face of DC in Tamil and Korean Kanakaraju in Telugu is not surprising. Even without Varun Tej's film (which grossed Rs 23 crore in its first three days), GDN would have stood no chance in the Telugu States. In Tamil, though, a section of the audience might have given it a go.
