The Odyssey eyes a record Nolan opening; Know the math

The Odyssey was released in theatres this Friday. Analysts project a strong $80–100 million domestic (North American BO) opening weekend. This range would potentially surpass Oppenheimer's $82.4 million opening and rank among his strongest openings overall.

Factors boosting expectations: No major competing tentpoles that weekend, massive IMAX/premium large-format demand, and strong interest from men over 25.

The film has a reported $250 million budget, so it needs strong legs and international performance to be a major success. Analysts see it as a contender for $800M to $1B+ worldwide if it plays well, similar to or exceeding Oppenheimer (which made $976M globally).

The Odyssey moved through pre-production, production, and post-production relatively quickly. Nolan's efficient, disciplined style helped keep things ahead of schedule. Nolan began writing the script around March 2024. The project was officially announced in late 2024. Pre-production (scouting, casting, technical prep for groundbreaking IMAX workflow) ramped up quickly into early 2025. Filming started in late February 2025 and wrapped in early August 2025. The film was in the making for 91 working days.
