Solid take off! Karthi's Sardar 2 Teaser signals a glossier chapter

The teaser for Sardar 2 has landed, and it looks like a leap forward for Tamil action cinema. The visuals are sharper. The scale feels larger. The polish matches what audiences now expect from the best pan-Indian productions. Directed by PS Mithran, the spy thriller is set for a worldwide release on September 10, opening simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.

Prince Pictures and Ivy Entertainment have produced the film. Considering that the rumoured budget of Sivakarthikeyan's Madaraasi was more than Rs 100 Cr (a recent reference point), it would be safe to assume that Sardar 2 must have cost even higher: the grandeur speaks for itself.

Karthi to join his brother's league?

Karthi returns in his dual roles as Agent Sardar and Inspector Vijay Prakash. The actor has had a difficult run of late. Vaa Vaathiyaar (what was it even called in Telugu, by the way?) underperformed earlier this year, and Sardar 2 itself faced repeated delays before finally locking its release. A fantastic opening would mark a much-needed turnaround for him. There is another reason for optimism. Karthi's brother Suriya recently delivered Karuppu (Veera Bhadrudu in Telugu), which became his highest-grossing film ever. A hit Sardar 2 would give the family back-to-back box office wins within months of each other.

Sardar 2 brings together SJ Suryah (he is rocking in the teaser), Malavika Mohanan (the only letdown), Ashika Ranganath (the cutie of Naa Saami Ranga is back), Yogi Babu (he is puzzled in this world of mega clashes and confusing identities) and Rajisha Vijayan, with cinematography by George C. Williams, music by Sam CS and editing by Vijay Velukutty.

Will Sardar 2 threaten any Telugu movie releases?

As of now, Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali is scheduled to be released on September 11. However, this is mostly not happening. If Sharwanand's Bhogi or any other major Telugu movie is eyeing the slot, it will have to compete with the potential crowd favourite, Sardar 2.
