James Cameron nearly rejected Leonardo DiCaprio for Titanic

Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most iconic on-screen pairings, Leonardo DiCaprio almost lost the lead role in Titanic. Director James Cameron revealed that DiCaprio’s attitude during the casting process nearly cost him the part of Jack Dawson.

According to Cameron, DiCaprio arrived expecting only a casual meeting and was surprised when asked to perform a screen test with Kate Winslet. The young actor reportedly responded, “Oh, I don’t read.” Cameron immediately warned him that refusing to audition meant he would not get the role. However, everything changed once the camera started rolling. Cameron said DiCaprio instantly transformed into the charismatic and emotionally engaging character he envisioned. "This is why Cameron is Cameron. He is an absolute dictator on set, but he is usually right. He wasn’t going to risk one of the most expensive movies ever made on an actor who thought he was too big to audition," an X user commented.

Over the years, many have had mixed opinions about DiCaprio. "I will forever have the opinion that Leo was not the guy for this movie. He was too immature looking and small. That role needed an actor with a bigger male presence," a movie buff wrote.
