Prime Video cancels Nicolas Cage's Spider-Noir after first season

Amazon Prime Video has officially cancelled Spider-Noir after its eight-episode first season. The live-action Marvel series will not return for Season 2, Variety has reported.

The decision comes as a major surprise to many industry observers. "The Nicolas Cage-led series earned 11 Emmy nominations this year. That tally represented the highest total for any Prime Video program in the current lineup," the report added.

The show followed an aging private investigator in 1930s New York City grappling with his past as a superhero. Critics praised the gritty atmospheric setting, strong performances, and unique noir style. Despite critical acclaim and strong fan support, the platform decided not to move forward with additional episodes. The cancellation ends Cage's run in the primary lead role, leaving the inaugural season as a standalone storyline.

Fans are disappointed. "This really sucks. SPIDER-NOIR was clearly made with a lot of passion and reverence for the character. I loved this show," a viewer wrote. "This is a bummer. It’s not entirely unexpected given that it doesn’t leave any loose ends and Cage is always working, but still, I was quite fond of those characters and would have loved to have seen the second season delve into WWII and maybe introduce a version of Doc Ock," Richard Newby wrote.

Luke Milani compared the scenario with what happens at Apple TV. "This is why Apple TV is winning. They will give pretty much any show another season. Out of 85 Apple TV Originals with one season out right now, I counted just 15 that have been cancelled. Apple TV is giving creatives time to work on their stories. That’s the most valuable asset in the entertainment industry right now," he added.
