WSD Walk 2011

Four Hundred Optometrists conducted THE OPTOMETRY WORLD SIGHT DAY WALK to create awareness on EYE DONATION.

The walk was flagged off at the Prasad Film laboratories, Banjara Hills, by Sri Akineni Nageswara Rao, Commissioner of Police Mr. A.K. Khan and Telugu film producer Mr. Dil Raju. Also present at the event to support the cause were Sri. Akineni Ramesh Prasad and Smt. Manchu Laxmi. This social welfare walk was organized by the Bausch & Lomb school of Optometry (BLSO) alumni group, powered by Essilor and L V Prasad Eye Institute.

This day went down in the history of Hyderabad as all optometrists from the city came together to support a social cause.

The organizers from BLSO alumni group said, "There are more than 4.6 million visually challenged people in India due to corneal reasons. We decided to dedicate World Sight Day to motivate citizens to pledge their eyes. We need 1,00,000 transplants in a year to control this situation, but unfortunately only 10,000 transplants happen annually in India. Therefore we need to spread awareness about eye donation. We are delighted to have nearly 400 professionals who proactively came forward to support this cause."

Addressing the issue of lack of eye donations in our country, chief guest Sri Akkineni Nageswara Rao expressed that more eye care-professionals and students should be involved in such social awareness camps to motivate people to pledge their eyes.
Mr. A K Khan expressed his delight over this initiative by the optometrists of Hyderabad, and motivated participants to continue frequent efforts to address the imperative issue of eye donations.

Smt. Manchu Laxmi pledged her eyes during this campaign and expressed her happiness for being a part of it.

The chief guests and all the four hundred optometrists who participated in the walk lead by example by pledging their eyes for donation, and thus successfully conveyed the message that it's a responsibility of every human being to pledge their eyes and support eye donation.
