Indian film industry pays tribute to Dev Anand

Bollywood legend Dev Anand died in his sleep after a cardiac arrest in London on Saturday. He was 88. He is survived by his wife, former actress Kalpana Karthik, a son and a daughter. According to Dev Anand’s manager Mohan Churiwala, Dev Anand’s son Sunil came out of the bathroom and saw that he was not responding. When he called the doctor immediately, the doctor declared him dead stating that he had a heart attack. He died at 10 on Saturday night in London. The cremation will be held in London only after Tuesday because his wife and daughter must reach the place. Right now his body is kept in the hospital.

The film fraternity was shocked over the news of the demise of the legend this morning. Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Batt, Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, Dia Mirza, Shreya Ghoshal, etc., expressed their grief over the era that had ended with his death. The Indian Film Industry, media and public from all parts of the nation paid tributes to the legendary actor as soon as the news went round.

Born on 26th September, 1923, Dev Anand was an Indian film actor, director and producer in Bollywood. He was often compared to the famous Hollywood actor Gregory Peck all over the world. In a career spanning over 65 years, some of his all time hits were ‘Do Sitare’, ‘’Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Pocket Maar’, ‘C.I.D.’, ‘Sharabi’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Solva Saal’, ‘Kaala Paani’, ‘Insaniyat’, ‘Manzil’, ‘Asli-Naqli’, ‘Hum Dono’, ‘Jewel Thief’, ‘Johny Mera Naam’, ‘Guide’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Samne’, ‘Gambler’ and the list goes on. His last film was ‘Chargesheet’ which released this year, was written, directed and produced by him.

Apart from acting he also directed 19 films including ‘Prem Pujari’ and ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ and produced 31 films of which 18 were commercially successful. The legendary actor was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2001 and and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002. This apart, he also won numerous top awards nationally and also got international honors and recognitions.
