OTT biggie: Squid Game season 2 reviews come in

We all know how popular Squid Game is. The second season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller series, streaming on Netflix, stars Lee Jung-jae, Wi Ha-joon, Lee Byung-hun, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Jin-wook, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-shim, and Lee Seo-hwan.

For those who don't know, the story of season 2 is set three years after Seong Gi-hun won Squid Game, giving up on going to the United States and returning with a new resolution in mind. "He once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of ₩45.6 billion," the plot summary reads.

So, what are the reviews saying?

TIME has given a mostly negative review. "Yes, there are new games, but their candy-colored, nursery-rhyme-soundtracked killing fields aren’t meaningfully different from the violent spectacles viewers saw last time. Once the games have begun, Jun-ho’s search for the island becomes an afterthought," the reviewer there wrote.

Indian Express opined that Netflix’s biggest series returns with a plot filled with twists but "not as fast-paced as season one." The reviewer there adds, "In spite of featuring several bone-chilling sequences, the series makes the characters dwell on humanity and ethics."

Collider finds the season utterly predictable. "Season 2 switches up the formula for Squid Game to offer a fresh take on the concept. Still, despite a promising start, the show continues to rely too heavily on the same archetypes that made the first season feel so predictable," the reviewer says.
