At a recent awards function, hosts Rana Daggubati and Teja Sajja cracked politically incorrect jokes. They took a swipe at the Guntur Kaaram vs. HanuMan controversy during this year's Sankranthi. Rana almost called 'Mr. Bachchan' the lowest low of the year. And they also made fun of the film 'Adipurush'.
The reactions on social media by Telugu movie buffs have ranged from rational to emotional. Most award shows hosted locally in Hyderabad and every single TV show simp for movies and cinema stars. For a change, this non-Hyderabadi awards event joined the memers community to make fun of a select few Tollywood creations (although 'Adipurush' was a Bollywood project, its hero is a Telugu man).
The fans of most Telugu movie stars are not used to this brand of humour during award shows. Their fan base is comfortable with their favourite stars winning PR-driven awards, though. They advertise their immaturity once jokes are cracked about their favourites.
To be fair to Rana Daggubati, he displayed the ability to troll himself. This ability to laugh at oneself is what separates some celebs from others. Rana allowed Samantha Ruth Prabhu to mock 'Rana Naidu', the Netflix show. In the past, he laughed at himself by having Natural Star Nani jovially degrade him ('Leader' would have been a blockbuster had its lead actor been anyone else but Rana").
Mocking Ravi Teja's 'Mr. Bachchan' at the awards show was gutsy, considering it was produced by one of the most happening production houses around. Humorous jibes puncture the egos of stars/directors. We need more of this brand of comedy.
