Consider these facts about supergirl movies:
1. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow ended its worldwide box office run at approximately $125.8M against an estimated $170M production budget.
2. Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) grossed $169.6M worldwide.
3. Catwoman (2004), Elektra (2005), Black Widow (2021), The Marvels (2023), and Madame Web (2024) flopped as well.
Now, what do these failures tell us? Movie buffs and commentators have an interesting set of analyses to make.
"Men watch the majority of sports and action movies, even women’s sports and women led action movies. Women drive the market for romance and social dramas," Daniel Bordman added.
As per commentators, Supergirl and WW84 all lacked the built-in "event" pull of Batman, Spider-Man, or Avengers-tier properties. "That is a more useful lesson than the raw box office numbers alone: mid-tier superhero properties are increasingly struggling to justify $150M+ budgets when they don't have ensemble or crossover appeal," a BO analyst wrote. There is a counter-argument, though. "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow needed $300 million to break even. One excuse for the poor performance was super hero fatigue, but Spiderman seems to have done alright," wrote Seth Dillon, disagreeing with those who say superwoman movies have suffered because of a widespread, gender-neutral fatigue.
