Dulquer Salmaan talks about 'Lucky Baskhar' success

'Lucky Baskhar', by amassing more than Rs 55 Cr worldwide gross in four days, has become the latest success story. Dulquer Salmaan, who has been put up in Hyderabad to shoot for another movie, today interacted with the Tollywood media to talk about the film's success. In this interview, he lauds director Venky Atluri, besides suggesting that Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas' professional handling of the project did a great deal of difference.

What drew you to the role of Baskhar Kumar in the film?

When I heard the narration from Venky Atluri, I was immediately excited and accepted the film on the spot. I was fortunate to have the dates available. It helped that the producers didn't take long to get ready for the shoot.

It's interesting that you said Baskhar is a relatable character. In what sense is he relatable?

The journey of Baskhar resonated with my own childhood dreams. Growing up, I used to imagine winning the lottery, which is something Baskhar dreams about.

You have mentioned your love for trying different genres. How does Lucky Baskhar fit into that approach?

This film is a unique addition. I also think it reflects my upbringing—my mother made sure I knew the value of money, even though my father, Mammootty, is a superstar. That’s why I connect so well with Baskhar.

How do you feel about the reception from the Telugu audience and your track record in Telugu cinema? At yesterday's success press meet, you commented that you feel a divine connection with the Telugu audience.

Back then (during the Mahanati days), I was nervous about my performance potentially bringing down such a grand film, but their (referring to Nag Ashwin and Swapna Dutt) belief really gave me confidence. It’s incredible that Lucky Baskhar has also found a similar reception.

What are your thoughts on the love Telugu audiences have for cinema, and how has it influenced you?

Telugu cinema has such a passionate fan base. My father has always admired the language, calling it one of the “most expressive” languages, and I have come to understand that more with each film I do. I feel lucky to have become a familiar face in Telugu households. Even when my Malayalam films weren’t released here, fans from Hyderabad would reach out to me, and that love has been so motivating. I am really excited about future projects here!

Lucky Baskhar received an overwhelmingly positive response. How do you feel about the audience's reaction?

I am honestly overjoyed. I have been trying to find one piece of negative feedback, but the response has been purely positive across all the South Indian states where it released. Initially, I had asked editor Navin Nooli and director Venky Atluri to let certain shots breathe, but I am glad they held their ground.

Can you share anything about your upcoming projects?

I am currently working on 'Aakasam lo Oka Thaara' in Telugu, and there are a few other projects in early discussions. As for a project with my father, Mammootty, nothing’s confirmed yet—he has the final say on that!
