'Sookshmadarshini': A Malayalam thriller worthy of being remade

'Sookshmadarshini', starring Nazriya Nazim of 'Raja Rani' fame as a homemaker named Priyadarshini, is currently playing in theatres. Also featuring Basil Joseph (as Manuel), the thriller is critically acclaimed.

Much like 'Drishyam', this film, too, has the potential to be remade in at least one language. While 'Drishyam' was flawless and inventive, 'Sookshmadarshini' is less so. Nevertheless, it is one of the finest thrillers to have been made on the Indian screen. "Sookshmadarshini automatically reminds one of the films Rear Window, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window and The Woman in the Window," wrote Hindustan Times in its review, analyzing its sensibilities. Directed by MC, the title means a 'microscope'.

When 'Drishyam' came about, actors like Venkatesh and Kamal Haasan latched onto the remake bandwagon. Had 'Sookshmadarshini' been made ten years ago, its remake rights would have been selling like hot cake. Unlike 'Drishyam', which was impossible to be tinkered with, 'Sookshmadarshini' lends itself to be improved upon. In the hands of a superior filmmaker, its Hindi or Telugu remake would be a treat.
