Annagaru Vostaru Trailer: Karthi's quirky comedy style feels fresh

Tamil cinema's knack for idiosyncratic comedy is occasionally better than that of Telugu cinema. In the past many years, though, this talent has been eclipsed by an itch for maximalism and over-the-top treatment. But when the sub-genre of comedy is done right, Tamil films can be a delight to watch. Annagaru Vostaru (Vaa Vaathiyaar in Tamil) seems to belong to that category.

Karthi plays a cop who comes with his own set of 'cinema picchi' tropes. As his father says, he can do no wrong because he belongs to a league of his own. The central conflict involves politicians and a serious conspiracy being hatched.

There is a theory that Krithi Shetty's character could be a mere hallucinatory one. In that case, the rom-com track is going to be another rib-tickling one.

Finally, the nature of the action. The cuts are slick, the stunt choreography is not loud, and the treatment is lively. Director Nalan Kumarasamy may well be narrating an entertaining vigilante cop actioner.

The film has Shilpa Manjunath as another important female actor. Both Satyaraj and Rajkiran have important roles. The film co-stars Madhur Mittal, Anandaraj, Karunakaran and others. Producer KE Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green has also worked with artists like GM Sundar, Ramesh Thilak, PL Thenappan, Vidhya Borgia, Nivas Adthitan, and Madhur Mittal. George C. Williams (cinematography), Vetre Krishnan (editing) and others have worked on Annagaru Vostaru.

Annagaru Vostaru heads to theatres on December 12.
